Before the laundry goes into the drum, a few simple steps determine the lifespan of the fibers.

  • Sort by color: Wash light and dark textiles strictly separately. This is especially important with brightly colored designs to prevent a gray cast or color bleeding onto lighter areas.
  • The inside-out trick: Always turn duvet covers and pillowcases inside out. This prevents the printed outer surface from rubbing directly against the drum or other textiles – protecting the delicate details of the designs.
  • Closure technique: Close zippers and button plackets completely. Open zippers act like tiny saws in the machine and can tear tiny holes in the fabric.
  • Loading the machine: Do not overload the washing machine. Textiles need space to be rinsed. An overfilled drum increases mechanical stress and leads to increased pilling (small balls of fabric).

Die Kunst der richtigen Temperatur

Higher temperatures are not always better. Modern detergents are effective even at low temperatures.

  • 30°C to 40°C (standard temperature): Ideal for the regular cleaning of brightly printed percale or flannel bed linen. This protects the cotton fibers and saves energy.
  • 60°C (Hygiene Wash): This temperature should only be used for heavily soiled items or for allergy sufferers (with microfiber) to effectively kill mites. Always check the sewn-in care label.
  • Prevent shrinkage: Cotton is a natural product and can shrink easily at excessively high temperatures. A moderate wash cycle will preserve the fit.

Waschmittelkunde: Schützen statt Bleichen

The choice of detergent determines how long the colors of your textiles will remain vibrant.

  • Color detergent (liquid or powder): The best choice for colorful prints. It contains no optical brighteners or bleach, thus sealing the color pigments into the fabric.
  • Avoid fabric softener: * With microfiber: Fabric softener coats the synthetic fibers like a film and clogs the pores. Breathability is lost.
  • For terry towels and hand towels: Too much fabric softener reduces the absorbency of the cotton loops.
  • Vinegar as a natural helper: A small splash of light white vinegar in the fabric softener compartment fixes colors during the first wash and has a natural descaling effect without stressing the fibers.

Trocknen und Glätten

How the laundry comes out of the machine is crucial for how it feels on the skin.

  • In the fresh air: Drying on a clothesline is the gentlest method. But be careful: Hang colorful bedding inside out in direct sunlight, as UV rays act like a natural bleaching agent.
  • In the tumble dryer: Select a gentle drying program ("cupboard dry" instead of "extra dry"). Drying for too long at high heat makes the fibers brittle and leads to creases.
  • The ironing secret: It's best to iron percale bed linen when it's slightly damp. The heat from the iron then effortlessly smooths the fibers and gives them a luxurious sheen.

Find your favorite material: Whether warm flannel or cool percale – each material offers a different feel against the skin. In our material guide, you'll learn everything about the special features of your bedding and other home textiles .
